New Belgian Brewing Backs Craft Lager Startup Open Brewing

Must read

New Belgium Brewing, the American beer maker owned by Japan’s Kirin Holdings, has bought a stake in local startup Open Brewing.

The level of funding was not disclosed. New Belgium Brewing said in a brief statement that it had made a “small minority investment” in the California-based business, which was founded last year.

New Belgium Brewing added in a statement that “the partnership…includes contract brewing, consulting and several other shared resources as we enter the industry.”

Open Brewing’s managing director is Keir Dillon, former CEO of cannabis branding agency Dillon Agency, according to LinkedIn.

Three weeks ago, Open Brewing was hiring for an Area Sales Manager on LinkedIn. This position is to “establish and develop Open Brewing’s sales infrastructure from scratch.”

In a statement published online, Open Brewing describes its Open beer as a “light-bodied, refreshing Pilsner-style lager.” It has an alcohol content of 4.4% and comes in 12 oz (355 ml) cans.

Open Brewing’s Instagram post last week gave a nod to its brewing agreement with New Belgium Brewing. A post posted before Christmas listed a number of stores in Los Angeles and Long Beach where open beer was sold.

New Belgium Brewing has production facilities in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Asheville, North Carolina. The company also has a taproom and pilot brewery in San Francisco and Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Last year, New Belgium Brewing entered into a deal with Constellation Brands to acquire its production facilities. The Voodoo Ranger brand owner has added a Daleville, Virginia, US brewery to its roster.

In November, the company appointed former marketing executive Sean Belongie as CEO. Belongie, who served as chief marketing officer for five years, replaces Steve Feschheimer, who has stepped down.
