Discounter Aldi plans to open nearly 50 new stores across Spain this year, continuing its recent growth trajectory in the country.

In Spain, the retailer operated by Aldi Nord is looking to establish a larger presence in the market, with the expansion building on the momentum of opening more than 100 stores in the past three years.

Aldi said it will focus on strategic regions such as the Canary Islands and northern Spain (Basque Country, Galicia, Cantabria and Castile and León). Meanwhile, more than half of the new stores will open in Andalusia, Madrid, Valencia and Catalonia.

Other regions such as Extremadura, Murcia and the Balearic Islands will also welcome new Aldi stores as part of the move.

New distribution center

To support this rapid expansion, Aldi will open a new distribution center in Miranda de Ebro (Burgos) early this year. The 40,000 square meter facility will supply stores in the north of the country.

Additionally, the Sagunto (Valencia) distribution center, opened late last year, is expected to be fully operational by February of this year.

According to the discounter, the secrets to Aldi’s success in Spain are low prices, a focus on private label (86% of products sold are its own brand) and the Spanish origin of most Aldi products (80% are locally sourced). ).

Aldi’s customer base has grown by 33% in the past three years to more than 7 million shoppers. Between September 2022 and his 2023, more than one million new customers will shop at the discount retailer, underscoring its growing appeal for Spanish families.

The German discounter has 435 stores in Spain with 480,000 square meters of sales space, an 11% increase from 2022, when it closes in 2023.
