American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin was flown to hospital after falling during the women’s downhill race in Cortina d’Ampezzo on Friday.

The 28-year-old lost control midway through her run and crashed into the net surrounding the Italian slope.

“Thank you for your support and best wishes,” she said. “Right now, I’m just taking it one day at a time.”

Austrian Stéphanie Benier, 30, won the downhill on Friday for her second World Cup victory.

Shiffrin holds the all-time record for World Cup wins with 95 race wins.

She added on Instagram: “As soon as I have more information and updates, I will share them. I’m very grateful that it hasn’t gotten any worse, but I’m in a lot of pain right now.

“I won’t be skiing the rest of this weekend and I won’t be skiing Kronplatz. It’s very difficult to say anything more than that right now. I’ll take a little time to talk to the team and see how everything feels. I need time.” Thank you for your continued support!

Earlier Friday, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team announced that Shiffrin’s tests would continue, but that the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in her left knee “appear to be intact.”

“Michaela Shiffrin was taken by ambulance to a clinic in Cortina where she is being evaluated for injuries to her left leg. Initial analysis shows that her ACL and PCL are intact. Further details to come,” the team said. Posted.

The race was stopped for more than 20 minutes and she was airlifted from the scene by helicopter.
