Mikaela Shiffrin escaped serious injury in a crash during a downhill race at the 2026 Olympic venue.
Shiffrin was taken down from the mountain by helicopter and taken to a clinic in Cortina, Italy, per the venue’s standard procedure. “Initial analysis indicates that the anterior cruciate ligament (in his left knee) and anterior cruciate ligament (PCL) are intact,” US Ski & Snowboard magazine said. Shiffrin replied to the post, saying, “Thank you for all your support,” along with prayer hands and heart emojis.
She then posted a photo of herself with a large ice pack on her left knee.
“I’m so thankful it’s not worse, but I’m pretty sore right now. I won’t be skiing this weekend, and I won’t be skiing Kronplatz either,” she wrote about Tuesday’s giant slalom race. .
“It’s very hard to say anything more than that right now. I need some more time to process with the team and see how everything feels in the coming days. Thank you everyone!”
Shiffrin crashed near the top of the Olimpia delle Tofane course, which will be used for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. She was heading towards Tofana Schuss, a narrow chute through a rock wall that is a distinctive part of the course, when she hit a patch of soft snow while landing a small jump.
Shiffrin crashed into a safety net at the edge of the track and was treated for about 10 minutes. However, she was able to get her left boot off the ground and, using her pole as support, stand up and walk with a limp.
While being taken to the hospital, Shiffrin communicated with the rest of the U.S. team, telling her teammates, “It’s okay, girl, there’s gold on the water, we got this.”
Three U.S. women finished in the top 20, and Shiffrin gave an update and cheered on her teammates.
“Seeing the Speed Team results today made me smile so much!!” she wrote.
Shiffrin broke Ingemar Stenmark’s World Cup wins record with her 87th win last season, and continued to improve on that record this season. She has won eight World Cup races, including last weekend’s slalom, and has a large lead in her standings as she looks to win her sixth overall title.
