Mikaela Shiffrin sent to hospital after racing accident in Italy

Must read

Mikaela Shiffrin was taken to hospital after falling during the women’s downhill at the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup race in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

The American, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the most famous skiers in the world, won her record-extending 95th World Cup victory in Jasna, Slovakia last week.

But on Friday, she lost control within 20 seconds of running and crashed hard into the netting surrounding the race ramp, appearing to injure her left knee.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team said on X (formerly Twitter): “@MikaelaShiffrin was taken by ambulance to a clinic in Cortina where she is being evaluated for injuries to her left leg.

“Initial analysis indicates that the ACL and PCL are intact. Further details will be provided in due course.”

Shiffrin later posted a photo on Instagram of her left knee with ice, saying it felt “pretty painful.”

The 28-year-old withdrew from the Audi FIS Ski World Cup in Kronplatz, Italy, on Tuesday as she awaits the full extent of her injury.

“At this point, I’m just taking it day by day. I will share more information and updates as I learn more,” she wrote.

“I’m very grateful it’s not worse, but it hurts a lot right now. I won’t be skiing the rest of this weekend, and I won’t be skiing Kronplatz either.

“Anything more than that is very difficult to say at this time. I need some time to process with my team and see how everything feels over the next few days. Thank you everyone. Thank you!”
