KDDI Asia Pacific used Juniper access points in the complete refurbishment of James Cook University (JCU) Singapore’s campus network.
The Singapore campus, wholly owned by JCU Australia, was established in 2003 as part of the company’s efforts to internationalize its business.
During the pandemic, the university conducted more than 60,000 online learning and teaching sessions before resuming full campus operations in 2022.
In response to student feedback asking JCU Singapore to continue to offer a flexible learning environment, the university has embarked on a project to deliver most courses in a blended learning approach.
As student numbers grew, the university also recognized that it needed a more robust network to support the evolving requirements of its students and staff.
Building on its long-term relationship across campuses in Australia and Singapore, JCU Singapore partnered with Juniper and KDDI Asia Pacific to overhaul its campus wireless network.

The project included deploying Juniper AP43 and AP63 wireless access points throughout the facility, including lecture halls, seminar rooms, libraries, laboratories, an aquaculture research center, and sports facilities, ensuring comprehensive high-speed wireless coverage throughout the campus. Using Juniper’s Mist AI and the cloud, the university’s IT team deployed APs across campus, established a wireless network ahead of the semester, and achieved comprehensive network visibility through a unified management interface.
AP works in conjunction with Juniper Mist Wi-Fi Assurance to enable JCU IT teams to identify the cause of Wi-Fi issues and resolve them with the student experience at the forefront.
With the upgraded network, JCU Singapore now has access to automated troubleshooting, analysis and optimization. Additionally, cloud-based management provides centralized control, rapid deployment, and scalability.
Looking to the future, the university is also looking to upgrade its existing Juniper switches and plans to use Juniper’s indoor location services to develop a campus navigation app.
