BGMEA Chairman Discusses Trade and Investment Opportunities with Singapore MTI

DHAKA, 31 January 2024 (BSS) – Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Chairman Faruque Hassan met with representatives from Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) and Enterprise Singapore (ESG). He discussed trade and investment opportunities.

The conference, held in Singapore yesterday, was attended by MTI Senior Director (Emerging Markets) Francis Chong. Uma Muniandi, MTI Deputy Director (Emerging Markets), Vann Ang, Senior Assistant Director (Emerging Markets) MTI. G. Jayakrishnan, Executive Director (South Asia, Middle East and Africa), Enterprise Singapore, said in a press release today.

BGMEA Director Asif Ashraf, BGMEA External Mission Cell Standing Committee Chairman Shams Mahmood and Rose Intimates Director Sanjay Kumar Naha also attended the meeting.

Discussions focused on exploring potential avenues to enhance trade and investment cooperation between Bangladesh and Singapore.

The two leaders also discussed free trade agreements (FTAs) between the two countries and the mutual benefits derived from such agreements.

During the meeting, the BGMEA Chairman presented Bangladesh as an attractive destination for foreign investors, citing the country’s growing infrastructure, special economic zones and other investment-friendly facilities.

He highlighted the increasing trend of investment in Bangladesh from countries including Japan, South Korea and China, and encouraged Singaporean investors to invest in textile machinery, man-made and technical textiles, recycling industry, light industry, shipbuilding, etc. He suggested that they consider developing new fields.

Mr. Farooque emphasized the importance of organizing reciprocal visits between businessmen from both countries to foster mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities.

He sought cooperation from the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry to facilitate exchanges between Bangladeshi and Singaporean traders and investors.

The BGMEA Chairman also highlighted Singapore’s potential as a garment export market for Bangladesh and asked for support in exploring market opportunities in the region.
