“Agriculture is dying,” read a placard held at a new nationwide demonstration by Italian farmers on Wednesday.

An AFP reporter witnessed a noisy convoy of dozens of tractors driving through the northern city of Cuneo, some carrying banners that read: “No farmers, no food, no future.” There was also a tractor.

As in other European countries, protests have intensified in Italy for weeks, with increasing numbers of farmers taking to the streets and blocking roads in what they see as a threat to their livelihoods.

Wednesday’s protest attracted more than 300 vehicles in Alessandria, near Milan, and a similar number of farmers and shepherds in Sardinia’s Cagliari port, AGI news agency said.

Although demonstrations have not yet reached the levels of France, Germany, and Belgium, the number and frequency of protests has increased.
