Despite the downturn in global wine consumption, recent data suggests a solid performance in the agricultural export sector, underscoring Spain’s important role on the international stage.
According to the Interactive Foreign Trade Report compiled by the Ministry of Agriculture, Spain’s agricultural exports totaled a staggering 64.4 billion euros in 2023.
In contrast, imports were reported at 50.5 billion euros, resulting in a favorable trade surplus of 13.9 billion euros.
This result underlines the efficiency and competitiveness of Spain’s agricultural sector, although it is slightly down compared to the previous fiscal year, when exports amounted to more than 68 billion euros.
Spain’s export status
Despite a small setback since 2022, when overseas sales from the Spanish countryside broke records, the country’s agricultural exports showed resilience and continued growth.
Last year’s figures reflected a dynamic and robust sector that was able to maintain significant trade surpluses despite fluctuating global market conditions.
Markets to watch
From January to November 2023, Spanish wine exports had mixed results in different markets. Germany emerged as the top destination, purchasing wine worth €371.9 million.
The US followed closely, bringing in €347.8 million, despite a notable sales decline of 7.4% year-on-year.
The British market also played an important role, importing €312.5 million worth of Spanish wine.
