At least three people were killed and dozens injured in a spate of car crashes in northern Italy on Monday as dense fog blanketed roads, authorities said.

More than 150 vehicles were trapped on the road after the crash, and the A-22 motorway between Reggiolo and Carpi in Emilia-Romagna was temporarily closed for more than 70 kilometers.

Among the three victims was a truck driver whose vehicle collided with a car, causing a pileup in the Emilia-Romagna region. Approximately 25 people were injured, two of them seriously, and one person was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Two other victims, a couple, died on the A21 motorway in Lombardy, near the city of Brescia, where poor visibility and heavy fog were also reported. More than 50 people were injured on a highway east of Milan.

Another accident, also caused by fog, occurred at 153km on the A1 between Reggio Emilia and Modena.

The accident caused a traffic jam. A police patrol of 12 people intervened, 10 to 15 ambulances went to the spot, and firefighters went to rescue the injured.

According to local reports, the road remained closed at the time of writing.
