Addressing acute malnutrition in children under five and supporting livestock production during drought periods
In Chad, approximately 2.9 million people are projected to experience high levels of acute food insecurity (Executive Harmonization Phase 3 and above) during the lean season in 2024, and more than 1.74 million children under the age of 5 will be acutely malnourished. High possibility (October 2023-April 2024). The country is facing a serious humanitarian crisis, mainly due to extreme weather and protracted conflict, including in neighboring countries, with spillover effects such as the arrival of thousands of people fleeing violence in the Greater Darfur region. This further worsens host communities’ already limited food reserves and livelihoods. Vulnerable families in Chad urgently need life-saving assistance, including timely agricultural support to quickly produce food.
Chad’s Kanem and Bar el Ghazel provinces are the most affected, with acute malnutrition rates exceeding 15% and expected to worsen in pastoral areas in early 2024. Furthermore, severe rainfall interruptions in the Sahel region from July to September 2023 will lead to early shortages of pasture, water holes and crop residues, which are critical food sources for animal health and especially children. production of dairy products is impaired.
In response, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium committed USD 500,000 through SFERA to the implementation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) emergency intervention. The project aims to reduce acute malnutrition rates among children under five and pregnant and breastfeeding women in Kanem and Barr El Ghazel. The project will run from February to December 2024.
FAO will provide 2,000 tonnes of feed to drought-affected pastoralists and benefit 1,520 tropical livestock units during the lean season. Feed is purchased from local suppliers and distributed in collaboration with local partners. Expected effects include a 25% increase in milk production, a 50% increase in milk consumption by children under 5 years of age, and a 20% reduction in acute malnutrition.
