He said Spain has a “unique opportunity” to harness renewable energy, with more than 80% of Spain’s electricity coming from renewable sources by 2030, ending its dependence on fossil fuels and achieving energy independence. It said it would strengthen the system and help avoid thousands of deaths from pollution.

According to official Spanish data, by 2023 more than half of Spain’s electricity will come from renewable energy sources, reducing CO2 emissions from electricity generation by more than 50 percent compared to 2018.
