Local cyber threats in Singapore will jump 52.9% in 2023, Kaspersky reveals

Must read

In Singapore, the number of cyberthreat sources originating from local servers increased by 52.9% year-on-year in 2023, new data from Kaspersky Lab reveals. Throughout the year, Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) detected a total of 17,010,939 incidents from servers hosted in Southeast Asian city-states. This is a sharp increase from her 11,123,465 incidents identified in 2022.

Servers hold vast amounts of information and provide data, resources, services, or programs to organizations. However, if proper security measures are not taken, it can be easily compromised by threat actors and used as a platform to incite attacks against organizations and external entities.

With the increasing adoption of cloud computing and increased reliance on technology vendors and third-party service providers, businesses are more sensitive than ever to these cyberthreats. This interconnectedness and shared dependency on centralized servers creates collective vulnerabilities. A notable example of this vulnerability is last year’s outage of a Singaporean healthcare provider caused by a denial of service (DDoS)-style cyber attack on his IT servers.

“Singapore’s regional data center ambitions continue to grow, with the recent lifting of data center moratoriums and public consultations starting at the end of 2023,” said Yeoh Siang Tiong, Kaspersky Lab’s general manager for Southeast Asia. “There is,” he said. “Clearly, this country is taking extensive steps to protect its critical infrastructure and strengthen it for the digital age.”

Kaspersky Lab advises businesses to identify critical business assets and systems and back up critical information regularly to ensure these assets are protected. Businesses should also understand the nature of potential threats, monitor cybersecurity news, choose proven endpoint cybersecurity solutions, and use the latest threat intelligence. By pre-designing and approving PR statement templates for different types of emergencies, your organization can also respond quickly and effectively in the event of a cybersecurity emergency.

Tiong added, “In addition to regulatory policies, organizations must continue to be collaborative and prudent in managing their resources to build cyber resilience to strengthen their businesses against complex and focused cyber attacks. There is a need,” he added.

Contributing to the global cybersecurity environment, Kaspersky Lab’s Security Network hosts a complex distributed infrastructure dedicated to processing cybersecurity-related data streams from millions of volunteer participants from around the world. The company says that the combination of expert analytics, big data, and machine learning within KSN enables the fastest detection of previously unknown advanced malware. This system forms a key component of Kaspersky Lab’s multi-layered approach to security.
