A man who came all the way to pay the 150 yuan (US$20) he didn’t pay for a night’s stay at a guesthouse a year ago has drawn praise on mainland social media.
A guesthouse owner named Yuan in Dongguan, southeast China’s Guangdong province, said he was moved that the man had come from another province to pay the money, the Xiaoxian Morning Herald reported. .
Surveillance camera footage showed a man walking towards the reception desk around 8 p.m. He took the cash out of his pocket, counted it, and handed it to Ewan.
“How much do I owe you?” he asks.
Confused, Ewan was about to ask who he was when the man realized that she did not recognize him.
“Remember me? I owe you money for a room,” he says in the video, adding, “I’m going to pay it back.”
As Ewan explains, he begins to remember that day.
“I forgot about him because I didn’t expect him to come back,” Yuan later told reporters.
He told her that he went to the city a year ago looking for work and stayed at Ewan’s shop. However, he could not find his job and after a few days his savings were gone, so he crawled out and left home.
“I help a lot of people. Some people can’t pay. I thought he was one of those who would never come back,” Yuan said.
He told Mr. Yuan that he would have come earlier if he hadn’t been feeling well, and apologized for being late.
Mr. Yuan realized that all his money was in loose change and believed that he had worked hard to save it, but he insisted that he would pay no matter how much she refused to accept it.
She eventually took 50 yuan from him and he looked relieved as he turned and walked out.
“His genuine spirit is truly a gem,” Yuan said.
