BYD and CATL form China’s leading solid-state EV battery

Must read

Chinese automakers and battery giants including BYD, CATL and NIO are partnering to form an “all-star” lineup aimed at developing all-solid-state EV batteries.

In a move that could revolutionize the EV market, major Chinese automakers and battery makers are partnering to commercialize solid-state batteries.

according to nikkei asiathe China Solid State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP) was established last month.

The government-led partnership brings together academic and industry leaders, including BYD and CATL, to create a solid-state EV battery supply chain.

China already dominates the global EV battery market, with BYD and CATL alone accounting for more than 50%. Data from SNE Research (via) bloomberg) shows that CATL’s sales in the US and Europe have doubled in the last year.

BYD and CATL batteries are used by Tesla, BMW, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Ford, and other major EV manufacturers.

China is trying to maintain its top position by stepping up research and development of next-generation EV battery technologies, including solid-state batteries.

Professor Ouyang Minggao of Tsinghua University explained, “We need to prepare for the risk that all-solid-state battery technology could overturn China’s dominance in the EV battery market.”

Mr. Mingao, who specializes in automotive technology development, emphasized the importance of bringing together industry leaders. CASIP will focus on commercializing EVs equipped with solid-state batteries and establishing a supply chain.

The goal is to develop next-generation EV batteries that can compete globally. The partnership includes top battery manufacturers such as CATL, BYD subsidiary FinDreams, CALB, EVE Energy, and Gotion High-tech. Automakers such as NIO and BYD are also expected to participate.

The partnership between BYD and CATL is interesting considering that BYD and CATL are competing in the LFP battery market. The report notes that CATL also sued CALB and SVOLT Energy Tech for patent infringement.

Government members include the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the National Energy Administration.

Chen Qingtai, head of China EV100, argued that solid-state EV batteries could change the power balance in the industry. If we cooperate, China will definitely become an “automobile superpower”.

Many other companies, including Toyota, have been promising to bring solid-state EV battery technology to market for years, but little has yet been achieved.

While Toyota holds more than 1,300 patents related to solid-state batteries, Chinese companies have fewer than 100. This partnership is aimed at ensuring China has an advantage.

Electrek’s view

All eyes will be on the collaboration between six of the world’s top 10 battery manufacturers, including BYD and CATL, to develop all-solid-state EV batteries.

These companies are already taking the industry to new heights. Based on my decades of experience, I have nothing against CASIP.

Toyota claims it has discovered a “technological breakthrough” in solid-state batteries, but the automaker doesn’t plan to bring it to market until 2027 or 2028. Even if it were to be realized, it would be extremely limited.

Recent toyota times Post explained that production is expected “beyond 2030.” Meanwhile, Korean market leaders such as Hyundai Motors, Samsung Motors, and LG formed alliances last summer to promote EV sales.

Hyundai has filed multiple patents related to solid-state EV batteries. Can South Korea lose to China? The competition to commercialize all-solid-state EV batteries will be a noteworthy one. We will bring you the latest information.
