SINGAPORE — A Singaporean man has paid the price for his angry behavior on Malaysia’s North-South Expressway (NSE). The Star reported that Soe Kian Hui, 45, pleaded guilty on Wednesday (Feb 14) to causing more than RM2,500 worth of damage during an altercation with another road user, and was fined RM5,500 (1,545). He was sentenced to a fine of Singapore dollars.
According to the indictment, Soh, a taxi driver, damaged the back window of a Toyota Fortuner with his cane after a heated argument with the car’s owner.
The incident occurred at 1:58 pm on Saturday in an area of NSE near Pagoh in Muar province and was recorded on video. The 54-second video, which was uploaded to Facebook and has been viewed 51,000 times, shows Mr So getting out of his car with a golf club and running towards the back window of a Toyota parked in front of him. The video showed him swinging.
The video then zoomed in on the gaping hole left in the Toyota’s window. The damage amount amounted to RM2,502.35.
Prosecutors sought heavy fines for the dangerous location.
According to The Star, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammad Arif Marzuki told the court that the area where Mr Soh parked his car was dangerous and should act as a deterrent not only to Mr Soh but also to other road users. He reportedly asked for a heavier fine during the process.
Soh’s lawyer, Noraine Sakina Zikri, said her client is currently caring for his 71-year-old mother, who has systemic lupus erythematosus and is recovering from cancer. She added that her client has no criminal history in Malaysia and is cooperating fully with police.
Johor state police chief M. Kumar said on Monday that initial investigations revealed the incident occurred when the victim blocked Mr Soh’s car in the emergency lane along the highway.
“This made the suspect, who appeared to be a foreigner, so frustrated that he got out of his car and broke the rear window of the victim’s car.”
The woman and man were arrested in July 2022 after a video went viral showing them acting aggressively towards the owner of another vehicle on Tuas Second Link. They were later released by Malaysian police and were not charged.
