Must read

The resumption of the Tripartite Maritime Training Awards (TMTA) was announced at the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) Wavelink Annual Lunar New Year Luncheon held on 14 February by Singapore’s Minister of Transport and Second Minister of Finance, Chee. Presented by Mr. Hong Tat.

The relaunched program covers both decks and engines, combining two previous programs launched in 2009, the Tripartite Nautical Training Award (TNTA) and the Tripartite Engineering Training Award (TETA), and the Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI) has trained over 400 cadets.

The program is a collaboration between SMOU, the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) and NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), with support from the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA).

Minister Choi said the program has a goal of training 120 cadets over the next five years, with the next cadets starting training in September 2024.

“The resumption of the TMTA program demonstrates the strong commitment of our tripartite partners to supporting the attraction and development of local seafarer talent,” he said.

The program is aimed at both graduates and mid-career students, and provides course fee subsidies and training allowances for cadets to earn a Certificate of Competency (COC).

SMOU General Secretary Mary Liew said: “This joint effort underscores our shared vision for Singapore’s robust and prosperous maritime sector, supported by a skilled and dedicated workforce. TMTA ( The Deck/Engine) program provides a unique platform for individuals.” Start a fulfilling career at sea and contribute to our nation’s maritime heritage. ”

However, programs such as TMTA have only marginally helped meet the navigational requirements of Singapore, which operates the world’s fifth-largest ship registry, and the country continues to invest in the training of both domestic and international seafarers. I am.

The Wavelink Maritime Institute has produced approximately 20,000 qualified personnel to date, and Mr. Liu will be training specifically for future fuels such as methanol and ammonia, and the simulation center will help address decarbonization. I shared that it has been upgraded.
