A tourist from Spain was attacked and beheaded at Queen’s Plaza subway station in Long Island City on Thursday morning.

Long Island City 108th Precinct and 20th Traffic Precinct police say a knife-wielding suspect allegedly assaulted a 29-year-old tourist who was standing on the mezzanine of the E, M, and R lines around 10 a.m. is being investigated. Police said an unknown man approached him from behind at 2:00 a.m., pulled out a knife and slashed him on the left side of his neck, then ran away from the station in an unknown direction.

EMS rushed to the crime scene and transported the victim to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation said the victim was a visitor from Spain, not Brazil, as many news outlets reported.

The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect entering the station in the assault investigation, describing him as a black man with medium skin. He was last seen wearing a black vest over a gray hooded sweatshirt and a black face covering.

As of Feb. 11, the 108th Precinct has reported 23 assaults so far in 2024, one less than the 24 reported during the same period last year, according to the latest Compstat report. It decreased by 4.2%.
