Carl Spain: “People get annoyed when I laugh at my own jokes”

“It’s important to silence them,” he said. “Well, you have to make them laugh, but you have to keep their attention.

“It’s a completely different kind of job. It’s not like, ‘Anyway, hello, how are you, look at the ceiling?’ It has to be interesting right away.”

Mr. Spain is an avid joker, sometimes even making fun of himself.

“If I think of something, I’ll say it on stage,” he said.

“Years ago I recorded a TV show and I had to do some stand-up at the very last minute and people were getting annoyed because ‘he laughs at his own jokes.’ .

“But I literally ad-libbed the punchline and started laughing because I had just heard it.

“Sometimes it goes through a thought process and half of my brain says it and the other half thinks, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.'”

Mr. Spain noticed that he often laughed, especially when writing jokes about others.

“I also write for other people,” he said. “So sometimes I write a gag and say, ‘That’ll work for them.’

“Once, I was playing a show with someone and someone looked at me laughing and said, ‘You can’t write jokes like that,’ and punched me in the arm.

“I thought, ‘Am I being set up here?’ Is this a test?”

“I’m trying to get it back.”

While there are benefits to charging others for joke-writing sessions, Spain often regrets some of the insights he provides.

“There was a joke that I came up with and I really tried to take it back in that moment, and it was really good,” he said.

“Right now I’m working with three different people who are playing completely different characters, and I’m going to be working with them in the coming weeks.”
