The India-Italy Migration and Mobility Agreement received ex post facto approval from the Union Cabinet on Wednesday. The agreement between the two countries, signed on November 2, guarantees Indian students temporary stay in Italy for up to one year after their studies to gain professional experience.

The agreement was signed between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Italian External Affairs Minister Antonio Tajani. The bill aims to strengthen people-to-people contacts, promote the mobility of students, skilled workers, businessmen and young professionals, and strengthen cooperation on issues related to irregular migration between the two countries.

The bill also locks in the current Italian visa regime, including post-study opportunities, internships and professional training mechanisms, thus ensuring advantages for India under existing labor migration channels under the Flow Decree. Become something.
Under the agreement, Indian students will be able to obtain additional permanent residency for up to 12 months after completing their studies. This will help you gain your first professional experience after completing your academic/vocational training in Italy.

European countries have also listed provisions regarding professional training, extra-curricular internships and curricular internships for Indian nationals.
Under the current Mobility Decree, Italy has set aside quotas for 5,000, 6,000 and 7,000 Indian non-seasonal workers in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Regarding seasonal workers in India, the Indian government has set aside 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000 quotas for 2023, 2024 and 2025 under the current mobility order.
The Flow Decree is a system that checks the number of visas for non-EU nationals who can enter Italy for employment, self-employment or seasonal work.
The agreement is also expected to formalize an agreement between the two countries regarding the employment of professionals in the field of medicine and medical services. It will also help India and Italy formalize irregular migration of workers from India.
The joint working group will monitor irregular migration under a formal mechanism determined in accordance with the agreement. Collaborative working groups meet regularly in virtual or physical mode.
