WTOP’s Matt Kaufax reports on how a local pizzeria was recognized as one of the world’s best pizzerias by an Italy-based critics group.

Pupatella, a pizza restaurant with multiple locations in the D.C. area, has been recognized as one of the world’s best pizzerias by an Italian-based critics organization.

“To me, it’s one of the healthiest pizzas available. And it’s made with love every day,” said Enzo Algarme, founder of Pupatella.

This list was created by the organization “50 Top Pizza”, which is avidly followed in Italy.

Pupatella is one of 75 artisan chains recognized for delivering the best taste of Italy in every bite with our signature simple Neapolitan pizza. This style features a light, flat crust, tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.

“Eating our pizza is the same as enjoying pizza in Naples,” COO Jim Biafore told WTOP.

Biafore said Pupatera imports most of its ingredients from Italy to maintain authenticity.

“Our pizza is made by the people who come through our door every day,” he told WTOP. “I think being counted in the same category as Italian Pizza Specialists says a lot about the products we use and the team that brings it all together.”

“My local neighborhood grandma comes in every week and says, ‘Hey, you know, that was the best pizza I’ve ever had.’ That’s what really makes this job fun for me. “Yes,” Algarme added.

Biafore said he is thrilled to receive this recognition as he prepares to open a new store in Chantilly, Virginia, in the next week or two.Pupatella currently has eight stores open, seven of which are in Virginia and one in Washington, D.C.

“Chantilly is a great community,” he said. “We’re excited to be a part of it. We can’t wait to open our doors and welcome our new guests.”
