Cameron Alexander of North Vancouver, British Columbia, won the bronze medal in the World Cup men’s downhill on Thursday in Bormio, Italy. This was Alexander’s second career World Cup medal. He previously won gold in the men’s downhill in Hvitfjell, Norway, on March 4, 2022, just after the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Alexander’s other claim to fame was winning the bronze medal in the men’s downhill at the 2023 International Ski Federation World Alpine Ski Championships in Courchevel, France.
On Thursday, Alexander placed third with a time of 1:51.96. Cyprien Sarrazin of France won the gold medal with a time of 1 minute 50.73 seconds. Marco Odermatt of Switzerland won the silver medal with a time of 1 minute 50.82 seconds. Alexander reached the podium with a difference of 0.58 seconds. Switzerland’s Justin Mourisier took fourth place with a time of 1:52.54.
This was the third of 11 World Cup men’s downhill events to be held in 2023-2024. Alexander currently sits in ninth place in the World Cup men’s downhill standings with 86 points. The leader is Odermatt with 176 points. The bronze medal in Bormio will give Alexander confidence as he prepares for the 2026 Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics.
On Friday, Alexander will be one of five Canadian skiers competing in the World Cup men’s super-G race. He will be joined by James Crawford of Toronto, Ontario, Jeffrey Reid of Calgary, Alberta, Riley Seager of North Vancouver, and Brody Seager of North Vancouver.
