United Cup: Fokina and Sorribes lead Spain to dramatic 2-1 win over Brazil

On Friday, Spain won their United Cup Group A opener with Alejandro Davidovic Fokina and Sara Sorribes Tormo winning the mixed doubles final against Brazil.

After two singles matches tied at 1 win and 1 loss, Davidovic Fokina and Sorribes Tormo defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia and Marcelo Melo 6-4, 7-5, giving Spain one win in Group A. Increased to 0 losses.

Earlier, Haddad Maia defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo (Spain) 7-6 (1), 6-2 in the Group A match in the first WTA tour match of the new season, leaving the showdown with Spain 1-1. They tied the score at 1 and succeeded in winning the game. On to the mixed doubles match.

In the first leg of the competition, Fokina started the season with an easy win, dispatching Thiago Sabos Wild 6-4, 6-0, giving Spain a 1-0 lead.

The 24-year-old was solid from the baseline against the world No. 79, knocking the ball in cleanly from both wings and outscoring the Brazilian. Fokina won 79 percent (30/38) of her first serve points without facing a break point and won her United Cup debut after 87 minutes.

Each tie consists of three rubbers: men’s singles, women’s singles, and mixed doubles. The mixed team event will feature 18 countries, divided into six groups of three teams each. Poland, led by Iga Swiatek, is also in Group A.
