Georgia celebrates Belgium’s appointment as EU Council President

On the threshold of a new era for the European Union (EU), Georgian Foreign Minister Ilya Dalkiashvili expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Belgium on assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Belgium’s mandate, which runs from January to June 2024, is expected to guide the EU’s course amid pressing global challenges.

Following six months of Spain’s presidency, Belgium was placed on a mission to “protect, strengthen and prepare” under the leadership of Prime Minister Alexander de Croo. This vision resonates with the EU’s commitment to uphold democratic values, uphold the rule of law and strengthen the solidarity of its Member States. The main focus will be on providing unwavering support to Ukraine, which is facing severe geopolitical tensions.

Georgia’s EU aspirations

Georgia is currently the only South Caucasus country participating in the EU’s Eastern Partnership Program and the Euronest Parliament, and is aiming for deeper integration with the EU. Dalkiashvili’s messages on social media underline this ambition, expressing optimism for increased cooperation between Georgia and Belgium. He believes that this cooperation could facilitate Georgia’s path to full EU membership.

Belgian President’s Agenda

The Belgian Presidency will be crucial in shaping the EU’s legislative and policy agenda and will influence many areas of our time. Topics include foreign affairs, economic governance, immigration, health and social policy, as well as green and digital transitions. Furthermore, Belgium will contribute to decision-making regarding possible EU enlargement to include Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and the Western Balkans. Belgium is poised to lead the EU towards a future characterized by resilience and progress, with a focus on multilateral cooperation, peace, security and development.
