Spanish table grape prices soar by up to 230 percent

Must read

The loss of table grape production in various parts of Europe was a decisive factor causing a rise in the price of this product in the market. With arrivals from Namibia and South Africa, supplies are expected to improve very quickly and prices to stabilize in the coming days.

Reduced production in the US state of California also led to a disruption in the world trade balance, ultimately affecting the supply of this fruit in the Old Continent.

In this complex situation, a recent report by the Andalusian Federation of Consumer and User Associations (FACUA), namely the Consumer Activities Report, is worth noting. This report is carried out throughout the year at his eight large facilities in Spain and is prepared using grape prices in Andalusia as reference. Supermarkets and hypermarkets and the evolution they have experienced over the past two months.

For example, in Aldi supermarkets, a 500g package of El Mercado brand seedless grapes has increased in price from €1.19 in October to €3.19 in November and €3.89 in December, in just two months. The price has increased by 227%.

In Alcampo, a 500g tray of seedless white grapes went from €1.79 in October to €3.00 in December, an increase of 67%. During the same period, prices for Mercadona, Eroski and Lidl grapes increased by 56%, 56.3% and 53.7%, respectively. At Carrefour, prices rose 44%.

FACUA also compared grape prices in December 2022 with grape prices in December 2023. At Aldi, for example, a 500g tray of grapes costs €3.89 this December, or 44% more than last December. Lidl has increased its prices by 35%.
