Buchanan becomes first Canadian to play in Italy’s top league

Must read

Tajon Buchanan, who made headlines for Canada at the last FIFA World Cup, may soon be making history in Europe.

Multiple reports this week suggested that Buchanan’s rumored move from Belgian side Club Brugge to Serie A top club Inter Milan is nearing reality.

European football official Fabrizio Romano said Buchanan’s former club will receive €7 million plus additional fees.

In addition, a recent video shared by Italian Football TV shows the 24-year-old player arriving in Milan to complete the final stages of medical evaluation and documentation.

If the deal is announced, the fullback (and sometimes midfielder) will become the first Canadian to play in Serie A.

Buchanan has been a member of Belgian side Club Brugge since the summer of 2021, finishing the season on loan with former MLS club New England Revolution.

The Brampton, Ontario native was selected ninth overall by New England in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. He played three seasons before returning on loan from Club Brugge in 2021, before making his permanent move to Europe in January 2022.
