SINGAPORE: Sustainability and Environment Minister Grace Foo was elected president of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) on Friday 5 January.

Mr Foo, who oversaw Singapore’s sports policy as Minister of Culture, Community and Youth from 2015 to 2020, was appointed to the SNOC executive committee in October last year. Her term as SNOC president ends in 2026.

“I am grateful for the privilege of contributing to SNOC and the Olympic Movement,” Foo said after winning unopposed at the SNOC Extraordinary General Meeting held at the Singapore Sports Hub on Friday.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the NSA (National Sports Association) and stakeholders to realize the potential of our athletes to take Singapore sport to greater heights, and continue to create opportunities for our athletes to represent Singapore in major competitions.” I am.”

The post of SNOC chairman became vacant in July last year after former chairman and former National Assembly Speaker Tan Chuan-jin resigned following reports of an affair with MP Cheng Li-hui.

Subsequently, Jesse Poore, SNOC’s current most senior vice president, was appointed acting president.

The SNOC constitution provides that if a president resigns, the most senior vice president will be appointed acting president for the remainder of the president’s term.

Mr Tan served as SNOC chairman from 2014 until his resignation, and his term was scheduled to run until 2026.

With Hu’s election, Pua will return to his duties as vice president.

“I would like to thank my colleagues on the Executive Committee and the National Sports Federation for their support, and Mrs. Jessie Poore for her service as Acting President,” said Ms. Hu.

SNOC was founded in 1947. It coordinates the selection of Singapore athletes for major competitions such as the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Southeast Asian Games.
