Disgraced former Spanish football president Luis Rubiales claims: ‘Everyone who stops me says it’s unfair’ after receiving three-year ban over ‘Kissgate’ scandal

Luis Rubiales has opened up about the overwhelming outpouring of support he received after the Jenni Hermoso kissing scandal, explaining how “everyone” was saying the “attacks” against him were “unjustified.”

In October, Rubiales was sentenced to a three-year ban from soccer for kissing Spanish striker Hermoso on the lips without his consent after Spain’s World Cup win over England.

The incident completely overshadowed Spain’s World Cup victory, sparked outrage across the football world, and sparked one of the worst crises in Spanish sporting history.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee found that Rubiales had acted with “total impunity” during the trophy presentation ceremony following Spain’s 1-0 win over England in Sydney on August 20. It recommended tougher sanctions.

Former Spain women’s coach Jorge Vilda, Spain men’s national team coach Alberto Luque and the Spanish Football Federation’s marketing director are also under investigation for allegedly pressuring Hermoso.

But Rubiales, who was also caught on camera grabbing her crotch alongside Queen Letizia and her 16-year-old daughter Princess Sofia, claims she has been treated unfairly.

In a recent interview with El Espanol, Rubiales talked about how women approached him on the street and offered support, and described his treatment after the incident as “unfair.”

The 46-year-old said: “I walk around the city, I go shopping and go for walks every day, whether with friends or alone, in Madrid or Granada or Valencia or anywhere in Spain.Everyone who stops me, it’s I say it’s unfair and outrageous.

“I’m not talking about 20% or 30%, I’m not talking about everyone. I think I realized that he wanted to use my case to cover up and divert attention.”

Mr. Hermoso insisted that the kiss was not consensual, but Mr. Rubiales insisted otherwise and refused to resign. Despite this, a restraining order was issued for Mr. Rubiales, prohibiting him from coming within 200 meters of Mr. Hermoso or having any contact with him.

Asked if he had made a mistake in kissing Hermoso, Rubiales told El Espanol: “I asked her and she said yes.” She told me it was okay. Rubiales finally spoke about his decision to support Wilda after 15 players sent a letter to the Spanish Football Federation refusing to play under his guidance in September 2022.

Fifteen players said Wilda’s reign was affecting their “emotional state” amid talk of a lack of professionalism. However, Mr. Rubiales made his position on the situation clear.

The RFEF announced his dismissal in line with one of the first “rehabilitation measures” taken by interim president Pedro Rocha, but the Spanish football association appears to be hoping to shake things up amid the ongoing scandal.
