American pilgrims made up the largest international group to walk the famous Camino to Santiago de Compostela in Spain in 2023.

The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) welcomed more than 32,000 American visitors in a record year for this ancient pilgrimage site.

Interest in the Camino de Santiago, the network of pilgrimage routes across Europe leading to the tomb of St. James, is at an all-time high, with the number of pilgrims walking this site approaching 500,000 worldwide. But not everyone walks for religious reasons.

According to statistics released by the Pilgrims Office, 446,035 pilgrims from all over the world arrived in the Apostolic City last year. Forty-four percent of the pilgrims (approximately 200,000 people) were Spanish, with the largest number of international visitors being Americans (32,063), followed by Italians (28,645) and Germans (200,000). 24,342 people).
