As it was their first performance in Singapore, Japanese super duo YOASOBI were understandably nervous about whether they would have fans here before their performance on Thursday (January 11).

Admittedly, it may sound unbelievable to the fans themselves, considering how many people proudly express their love for YOASOBI through casual conversations and TikTok videos. Ayase, one half of the YOASOBI duo, admitted he was initially skeptical, despite receiving messages from Singaporean fans on social media asking him to perform here.

Speaking to local media on Friday, January 12, the 29-year-old composer said through an interpreter: Does it really have fans in Singapore? I was pretty skeptical about it. ”

But after Thursday night’s concert, his doubts were put to rest when he saw how welcoming the fans were and how warmly they welcomed the duo. According to concert organizer SOZO, YOASOBI performed in front of a crowd of 5,500 people at Resorts World Ballroom.

Ayase was also thrilled to see the audience singing along to their songs throughout the set, a sentiment echoed by vocalist I Kura. 23-year-old Iakura said, “They really sang our songs from beginning to end…I was very moved to see them do that.”

She added, “I almost burst into tears many times during the concert” due to the response, and held out a microphone to the audience so she could pick up their voices.

It is this passion and “deep love” that has left an indelible impression on the duo, with Ayase saying that if they were ever to write a song inspired by Singapore, they would draw inspiration from there.

He said, “What I felt during our live performance last night was that Singaporean fans are so passionate and have so much love for us. And even though Singapore is actually a multi-ethnic society, have passion and deep love for the same goal.

“If I were to create a song inspired by Singapore, that would probably be the theme that would infuse my music.”

How YOASOBI feels about his rapid rise to fame

For the uninitiated, YOASOBI formed in 2019 and initially released songs inspired by short stories.

Most people may know them from their debut single “Running to Night,” an upbeat song about suicide. The piece was released just before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and has since gone viral on social media platforms like TikTok.

Since then, they have continued to build an impressive catalog of songs, including songs from anime such as: beastars, Mobile Suit Gundam Witch of Mercuryand My favorite child. The duo quickly rose to fame from the beginning with “Running into the Night,” but it wasn’t until the pandemic eased that the impact was really felt.

Iqra said, “We debuted at the end of 2019, which happened to be during the pandemic. People were staying at home most of the time, and so were we. In fact, we didn’t meet many people and went out to the outside world. Since we didn’t go out much and our activities were mostly online, we didn’t really feel like we were becoming famous or popular. So at that time, we didn’t really feel that our lives had changed that much. It was.”

However, after going through a period of severe pandemic, they were able to hold live concerts and gradually realized their fame as they saw their songs ranked in music rankings in different countries. Now it looks like this.

Ayase acknowledges that the duo is “moving forward” and “progressing,” but he also knows that this is not YOASOBI’s ultimate goal. He explained: “I don’t want to call this the end of success, like the ultimate success, because once you start feeling that way, it means you’ve already reached your goal.” [not] How do you feel now? ”

I want to come back and play bigger venues.

Well, the message is clear. Despite his quick rise to fame, YOASOBI is not resting on his laurels. And for those who couldn’t make it to her debut concert, the duo are keen to come back again, preferably at a bigger venue.

Ikura said, “We are truly grateful for the love you (our fans) have given us. Thanks to everyone’s love, we were able to hold a concert in Singapore… We definitely want to return to Singapore again.” Please continue to listen to our music.”

Ayase said, “I was really happy to actually see the faces of our fans at this concert in Singapore. And in fact, we want to continue making music that excites our fans in Singapore.” Masu…

“Keep listening to our music so we can come back and maybe play bigger venues and see our fans next time here in Singapore.”
