The victory of Taiwan’s former vice president, Lai Ching-de, clearly demonstrated the public’s mood and attitude toward unification with China. But the pro-democracy candidate’s victory in Taiwan did not sit well with China, which has warned that the island nation faces serious consequences for attempting to carve up Chinese territory.
Immediately after the election results were announced, a war of words broke out between Chinese and Taiwanese officials. On the one hand, the Chinese government warned the United States for congratulating the winner, Lai Qingde, and on the other hand, Taipei accused Mr. Long of making “false statements.”
At a joint press conference with Taiwan, Chinese diplomat Wang Yi said, “If someone on the island of Taiwan considers independence, they would be trying to divide China’s territory, and they would be severely punished by both history and law.” is certain,” he said. “This is a dead end,” he added.
“No matter what the election results are, nothing can change the basic fact that there is only one China and Taiwan is a part of it,” Wang said on Sunday.

China sends strong message to US on Taiwan
After Lai Ching-tok’s victory, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated him and said the US government looked forward to working with all of Taiwan’s leaders.
However, the U.S. message to Taiwan did not satisfy China, which called the U.S. statement a “grave wrong signal to the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces” and maintained only informal relations with Taiwan. This violates the United States’ promise to do so.
The China Taiwan Affairs Office said in a statement that despite the victory of Lai Ching-de of the Democratic Progressive Party, it does not reflect mainstream public opinion.
In response to China’s comments, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on China to “respect the election results, face reality, and abandon its oppression of Taiwan.”
Recent elections indicate a deterioration in relations between Taiwan and China. The Chinese military regularly sends fighter jets and warships into the skies and waters near Taiwan. A conflict between the two countries is likely to involve the United States.
