Despite Sunday’s heavy defeat against Real Madrid, Xavi’s future at Barcelona is not in immediate jeopardy, although the club is “concerned” by the recent series of results.
The Blaugrana were humiliated by their arch-rivals in the Spanish Super Cup final in Riyadh on Sunday, with Vinicius Junior scoring a hat-trick as Real won 4-1.
Xavi led Barcelona to their first La Liga title in four years last season, but has been under intense scrutiny this season as the team sit fourth, eight points behind league leaders Girona.
Sunday’s defeat against Real Madrid, coupled with a lackluster title defense, will put further pressure on the 43-year-old’s shoulders.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona’s board is becoming increasingly concerned about the team’s form, but Xavi’s job remains secure for now.
After the defeat against Real, the former Spain midfielder insisted he was not worried about being sacked.
‘[There is] I’m confident,” Xavi told Movistar.
“We have to be self-critical and correct many things, but I still believe in the project and it has the potential to be a great season.” You have to be self-critical.
“There is reason to believe. Last year we won two trophies [LaLiga and the Spanish Cup] With me as a coach. It wasn’t that long ago. It was tough today and I’m sorry to the fans, but there are some arguments in our favor. ”
“Last season there was reason to say we entered a new era. Now we have to put up with criticism, self-critique and reset.”
Barcelona sporting director Deco insisted the club will continue to fully support Xavi, who signed a new contract last year until June 2025.
“This question makes no sense,” the former Porto, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder said when asked about Xavi’s future.
“The manager still has the trust of the president and the club, and this defeat does not change anything.”
However, Xavi also admitted that his drubbing against Real Madrid was a big blow to the club and apologized to the fans.
“It’s disappointing and sad,” Xavi told Movistar after the match.
“This is football and today we have to deal with the painful side of the game.
“I’m sorry for the fans, but we didn’t play in the game, but I have experienced many defeats with this club. Barça will be back.”
“Today is a setback and a big blow for me, the club and the players, but this is sport and the project goes on. I have been in situations like that many times.”
He added: “Now is the time to apologize to our supporters and accept the criticism that has been leveled at us.”
“Especially against Madrid, we didn’t show the team we should have shown in the final.
“Today was the worst possible scenario and we lost the trophy. I’m in charge. I accept criticism and will continue to work hard.
“It’s a tough loss, but we’ve bounced back from tough defeats many times in the past, so we’re going to compete again in the best possible way.”
