A crew manager at McDonald’s said he was “shocked”, adding that the incident happened around 1.50pm today.

Bystanders called the police and mall security as the middle-aged man quickly kicked the knife away.

“It’s very shocking that something like this happened in a mall. Things like this don’t usually happen in Singapore,” said one shopper, who wished to be known only by his first name, Tan.

Police told TODAY they responded to a call for help around 2:05 p.m.

“When police arrived, they found a 67-year-old man unconscious and suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound,” police said in a statement.

“He was then taken to the hospital and is currently receiving treatment.”

Police added that an investigation is ongoing.

When Today arrived at the scene at 4pm, several police officers were seen clearing away the tape used to cordon off the area while cleaning crews mopped up the blood.

An employee at a nearby food stall, who gave his name as Tan, said he found it strange to see a shirtless man standing there.

“I can’t help but notice why someone was half naked in a shopping mall,” said the 40-year-old.

Mr Tan, who declined to give his full name, added that the man did not say anything before stabbing him.

“There were a lot of people standing around. When the police came, they cordoned off the whole area.”

Several store owners in the mall were not aware of the incident when it occurred, only learning about it from curious customers who asked what had happened.

“Everyone was listening, but I was inside the store so I didn’t notice anything other than some police officers walking by,” said one person who works at a clothing store on the same floor and asked not to be named.

One of the mall’s exits remained unavailable until about 4 p.m. as police cordoned off the area. – today
