In the viral video, Sun says he is from a coastal area in eastern Jiangsu province.
An excellent student, he was scouted to study physics in Fudan University’s genius class in 1985, when he was a freshman in high school.
After graduating from university with a bachelor’s degree, I moved to the United States and earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D.
Mr. Sun then worked as a software engineer on Wall Street for two years, a job that paid him more than $100,000 a year, he said.
However, after a difficult divorce, his life began to spiral out of control and he began bouncing from job to job.
Ms Sun, a US national, said she developed depression several years ago and also suffers from other mental health issues.
“I suffer from delusions. I don’t know what’s real and what’s fake,” he was quoted as saying.
Since becoming ill in bed in 2007, Sun has received help primarily from his local church. They are said to be sleeping in internet cafes and subway stations.
“My life is the worst. Previously, I managed to cope with all the difficulties in life. But now winter is really tough for me,” he said.
The Fudan University Alumni Liaison Office in New York confirmed to the media that Son is an alumnus of the university.
Many alumni volunteers offered their support to Mr. Sun, while a WeChat group of 200 alumni members was formed to discuss further support for Mr. Sun.
Sun said he had only returned to China once in the past 30 years and had little contact with his family.
A former classmate from the school named Liu told Red Star News that Son was an elite student with exceptional academic ability.
“He has not had contact with his family for at least 10 years. Before he lost contact with his family, he said he had a “sensitive” job. We thought he was living a decent life overseas,” Liu said.
“Seeing him in a recent video, we were all surprised and sorry for his plight.”
Officials in Sun’s hometown of Jiangyin, Jiangsu province, said they were preparing documents to help him return to China.
“We spoke to him on the phone in his dialect. He was crying. Apparently he misses home a lot,” the official was quoted as saying.
In a video released on January 7, Sun showed off a new coat and a neat haircut, expressing his gratitude to the nation.
“I went through a dramatic change in my life that brought me to where I am now. I would like to thank everyone who has cared for and helped me over the past few days,” he said.
“Thank you for refreshing my mind and restarting my life,” Sun added.
But not everyone was sympathetic to his plight.
“He’s an American citizen. Why bother sending him back to China? No government in China should be willing to use its people’s tax dollars to support foreigners,” one official said.
However, another online observer said: “Teacher Sun, welcome back to China. I hope you can contribute to our motherland in the field of physics.”
Last year, a Chinese man who abandoned his wife and child in Shanghai and had been living in the United States illegally for 30 years returned to his home country with the help of Chinese expatriates living in New York.
