Chinese Navy’s next-generation frigate begins construction trials

Must read

first Type 054B-Frigate Built by Hudongsha in Shanghai, the builder trial has begun. This important step was confirmed through images shared on Chinese social media. The Chinese Navy’s next-generation frigate was captured by an enthusiast as it sailed up the Huangpu River, and appears to have returned from testing to a construction facility in Hudong, further up the river. The ship’s deck still features a prominent red anti-rust coating. The unfinished status suggests further painting and other work is still to be done before the frigate is handed over to the Chinese Navy for service trials and commissioning. The frigate was originally launched on August 26 at the Hudong China Factory in Shanghai.

Further confirmation of weapon specifications

New images reveal further details and features of this successor to the venerable Type 054A frigate. produced in large quantities Over the past 15 years. As for weapons, the VLS is his H/AKJ-16 design with his 32 cells similar to the 054A, with medium-range surface-to-air missiles of the HQ-16 type and his Yu-8 ASW missiles . Additionally, the Type 054B design features a tilted carrier in the center of the ship that supports her two quadruple box launchers for anti-ship missiles. The exact type has not yet been confirmed, with the YJ-83 or YJ-12 AShM both being likely candidates. Other armaments already identified include a 100mm main gun, possibly a Type 1130 gun CIWS, an HQ-10 missile CIWS, and a lightweight torpedo launcher.

Propulsion device does not include gas turbine

This image gives a glimpse of the chimney arrangement, hinting at CODAD propulsion. Image originally via Chinese social media Sinodefenceforum.

Importantly, the new images also resolve speculation about the type of propulsion. A closer look at the chimney arrangement reveals that Type 054B certainly features her CODAD (combination of diesel and diesel propulsion). The new design is therefore operationally consistent with the previous type 054A.previous guess including here navy news We considered a switch that includes a gas turbine in its setup. However, the choice of CODAD may represent PLAN’s preference for a carefully considered evolution in modern ship design rather than too many fundamental changes in a short period of time. This choice may also reflect the intention to mass-produce a modern frigate design while ensuring affordability and reliability in equal measure.

Distinctive reduction efforts that can be observed throughout the hull

A notable design element of the Type 054B appears to have been extensive optimization of the hull, resulting in a stealthier fighter. This goes beyond the overall hull shape to include shielding against both radar and infrared signals. The most obvious design feature here is the various covers fitted to the frigate’s vents and openings. This is not the first time a general implementation has been made. Type 055 large destroyer shows a very similar design aspect. However, Type 054B appears to further enhance signature reduction measures. Notable features include a cover for the starboard bow anchor, something not seen on previous Chinese fighters. A prominent shroud also covers the large vents on each side next to the RHIB bay.

Another Type 054B is in the later stages of outfitting at Huangpu Shipyard in Guangzhou. The second hull is expected to begin its own trials in the near future. At this stage, it appears that no further units of type 054B are under construction. Looking at the pace of construction, a long trial phase may be needed before moving into proper mass production. A careful initial phase and subsequent mass production will reflect the planned procurement of the Type 054A frigate and her Type 052D destroyer. In any case, this plan for the Chinese Navy’s next-generation frigates appears to be progressing smoothly so far.
