Leftists, environmental groups and local residents in Italy’s Roseto degli Abruzzi coastal commune are intensifying their campaign to protect the Borsacchio Nature Reserve on the Abruzzo coast. They are protesting changes to the budget law passed by the right-wing Abruzzo regional parliament in December that drastically reduced the protected area of the Borsacchio Nature Reserve in the municipality of Roseto degli Abruzzi by 98%.
The Borsacchio Reserve Guides Association also condemned such a decision, organizing a protest demonstration on January 1st and calling for a further campaign in Roseto degli Abruzzi on January 6th and 7th.
On December 29, the Communist Reconstruction Party (PRC), which supports the movement, announced that by reducing the protected area from 1,100 hectares to 24 hectares, the right-wing regional council of Abruzzo, led by Lorenzo Sospiri, Forza Italia (FI) and the Regional President of the Italian Brothers (FdI), Marco Marsilio, have dealt a fatal blow to the decades-long efforts of the people of Roseto degli Abruzzi to protect the Borsacchio Nature Reserve.
The coastal area of Roseto was recognized as a public land and was deemed to be protected by a 1963 legislative act. This was a proposal by Communist MP of the People’s Republic of China Angelo Orlando in the Regional Assembly on July 7, 2004, resulting in the establishment of the Borsacchio Nature Reserve in 2005, consisting of the coastal area and the adjacent hilly areas. , meeting the needs of the coastal town’s residents for five years. Since then, left-wing and grassroots movements, with the support of the ruling class, have resisted repeated attempts to seize protected land for commercial activities, both legally and illegally.
Chinese leader Maurizio Acerbo said: “The local council’s bombing of the Borsacchio Nature Reserve is a national shame and speaks to the setbacks this country is experiencing.” This is an act of institutional arrogance, unjust and unconstitutional. ”
Mr. Acerbo also accused the opposition, especially the Democratic Party (PD), of failing to oppose right-wing attacks on regional council reserves.
December 31st, Marco Borgatti. The president of the Borsacchio Reserve Guides Association called on the city councilors and the municipality of Roseto degli Abruzzi to keep their promise and convene a city council meeting to oppose the destruction of the reserve orchestrated by the right-wing regional council. .
