China said on Tuesday it had summoned the Philippine ambassador after President Ferdinand Marcos said he looked forward to working with Taiwan’s next president, Lai Ching-de.
At a regular press conference, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning said, “This morning, Assistant Secretary Nong Rong summoned the Philippine ambassador to China, made a solemn statement, and asked the Philippine side to provide a responsible explanation to the Chinese side.” Stated.
Mao Zedong said, “The Chinese side is strongly dissatisfied with Marcos’ remarks and firmly opposes them.”
In Taiwan’s presidential election held on Saturday, pro-independence leader Lai easily won.
China considers the democratic island part of its territory and has vowed to occupy it by force if necessary.
The Chinese government does not maintain diplomatic relations with countries that recognize Taiwan and opposes official communication with Taipei by foreign powers.
In a social media post on Monday, Marcos congratulated Lai on his election and said he looked forward to “close cooperation” with Lai.
Premier Mao Zedong said the remarks were “a serious violation of the one-China principle, a serious violation of the political commitments the Philippines has made to the Chinese side, and a serious interference in China’s internal affairs.” said.
“We are telling the Philippine side not to play with fire on the Taiwan issue, and to immediately stop making unreasonable statements and actions on Taiwan-related issues and sending false signals to separatist forces for Taiwan independence. ” she added.
“We advise President Marcos to read more books so that he can properly understand the history of the Taiwan issue and draw the correct conclusions.”
