SINGAPORE – Airbus’ A350-1000 aircraft will use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as part of its flying display at the Singapore Airshow 2024 from February 20 to February 22.
The fuel provided by Shell Aviation is a 35 percent mixture of used cooking oil and tallow, or animal fat, and the rest is regular jet fuel.
The wide-body aircraft was refueled with approximately 16 tonnes of SAF at Changi Airport on February 18 as part of a media showcase.
SAF is said to reduce carbon emissions by an average of 80% from production to end use and is therefore considered a climate-friendly option compared to fossil fuels.
Airbus said in a statement on February 18 that all of its aircraft can already operate at up to 50 percent SAF (the current maximum allowed ratio).
The company, which supplies commercial aircraft to airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific, aims to have its aircraft operating at up to 100 per cent SAF by 2030.
In the spirit of demonstrating its commitment to decarbonisation, an Airbus aircraft flew from its headquarters facility in Toulouse, France to Singapore using 90 tonnes of SAF.
An Airbus spokesperson said the airline would also consider acquiring SAFs for the plane’s return flight to Toulouse after the show, but this was subject to availability.
Airbus said it will be one of the largest exhibitors at Singapore Airshow 2024, with stands showcasing a full range of products and services, including civil aircraft, helicopters, defense and space markets.
Highlights include displays of the A330neo widebody aircraft, A400M military airlift aircraft, H145M full-scale mock-up, and purpose-built ACH130 Aston Martin helicopter.
Visitors can get up close to the Singapore Air Force’s H225M medium-sized helicopter and A330 multi-role tanker transport aircraft.
