Alexander Volkanovski is keen to travel to Spain for a rematch with Ilia Topria.
Volkanovski (26-4 MMA, 13-3 UFC) defeated Topuria (15-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) in the second round in the headliner of UFC 298 on Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. He lost the featherweight title.
UFC CEO Dana White has confirmed the promotion’s plans to have Topria make his first title defense in Spain later this year, and Volkanovski believes it’s a perfect fit for his return.
“Next time it will be different, but I’m going to take a little break,” Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel. “I’d love to have a rematch. From what I’m hearing it will happen in Spain. Dana wants Spain and Ilia obviously wants Spain. It probably won’t be until later this year. right.
“So it’s the perfect time to spend time with my family, get some rest, take care of myself and get back out there. We’ll get it resolved soon. I’ll give it my all for the next game.” I’m going to get the belt back. Remember what I said.”
Volkanovski said he was starting to feel good in the second round, but Topuria backed him against the cage and clipped him.
“I think the judges gave me the win in the first round, and I think I started winning more in the second round,” Volkanovski said. “I was also ready to go to another level. I was missing him and I started touching him and I thought I was starting to add, but he takes me to the cage. He did a great job and we knew we didn’t want to be with someone like him.
“He got me there and probably had better options than looking for a counter. He got me back that far and then he caught me. Great job of finding it, great shot, and that’s all you need in this sport.”
