Axpo will participate in a major green hydrogen project in Italy.
It was announced today that Axpo will be participating in a large-scale green hydrogen project in Italy’s Abruzzo region. Using existing industrial facilities in Corfinio, Axpo will supply up to 12 tonnes of hydrogen per day in partnership with Infinite Green Energy (IGE), which initiated the project, to meet the needs of so-called “hard-to-abate” customers. We support the decarbonization of your business. Industry and Transport Sector. The project includes a 30MW electrolyser powered by a 45MWp solar power plant, making it one of Italy’s largest hydrogen power plants.
Axpo and Australian renewable hydrogen company Infinite Green Energy have signed a joint development agreement (JDA) for the Valle Perigna hydrogen project in Abruzzo. JDA outlines strategic partnerships, advanced designs and plant investments that will contribute to the decarbonization of industry in the city of Corfinio. As one of the largest commercial-scale green hydrogen facilities in Italy, the plant will supply green hydrogen to customers in the industrial and transport sectors. The facility is expected to supply green power to the regional grid by late 2025.

Our partnership with an international energy company like Axpo will continue to build the trust of our shareholders and strategic partners.
“This partnership underscores IGE’s commitment to not only combating climate change, but also delivering a sustainable energy future and creating new jobs for local communities that benefit from green energy production.”
IGE is already in talks with hydrogen truck manufacturers regarding fuel.
Transportation use. The Valle Peligna project will see the first offtake by Etex.
One of Europe’s leading plaster products suppliers. The supply of green electricity to power factory production lines will also help manufacturers achieve their goals of replacing the use of natural gas with hydrogen. Overall, IGE estimates that the project will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 67,000 tonnes per year, including hard-to-abate industrial CO2 emissions.
The Valle Peligna Hydrogen Project 30 MW electrolyser can produce up to 4,200 tons of hydrogen per year, which equates to savings of approximately 18 million liters of diesel fuel. Local officials have dubbed the area “Hydrogen Valley” since IGE launched the project 18 months ago.
The development could also include hydrogen refueling stations. In the future, it could be extended to the entire European Union’s trans-European transport network, which requires hydrogen stations to be installed every 200 kilometers by 2030.
