Must read

BASF’s surface treatment division Chemetall has opened a new Global Aluminum Competence Center in Giussano, Italy.

The new center brings together Chemetall’s “comprehensive capabilities in the field of surface treatment of aluminum”, including research and development activities.

“The new Global Aluminum Competence Center will enable us to bring new surface treatments to market faster,” said Frank Naber, senior vice president at Chemetall. “Centralizing our aluminum R&D activities will create pioneering technologies that solve challenges for our customers around the world, provide solutions to their needs, and above all, deliver long-term sustainable value. .”

Italy is one of the EU’s largest markets with a strong manufacturing base. According to UNCTAD’s 2023 World Investment Report, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows into the country amounted to $19.9 billion (€18.53 billion), with 90% of foreign direct investment (FDI) flowing into the country in the same year, mainly due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. This was surprising given that the company had recorded billions of dollars in investment losses. .

The service sector ranked first, accounting for 60.1% of the total inward direct investment in 2021. Manufacturing was in second place (29.1%), with FDI in mining and quarrying and agriculture in 2021 at 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively. Northern and central Italy produced more than three-quarters (77.6%) of the country’s gross domestic product in 2021, but was home to only 66.2% of Italy’s population in 2022.

Aluminum is the most used non-ferrous metal in the world and is widely used in the production of many consumer products such as cans and kitchen foil.

For BASF, the recent investment in Italy comes on the back of other investments announced in Europe and Asia. In September 2023, the German chemical giant announced plans to double the production capacity of acrylic acid-based water-soluble dispersants at its factory in Dirovasi, northwestern Turkey.

Daniela Porzotto, Managing Director of Chemetall Italy, said of the new Aluminum Competence Center in Giussano: Our team has great expertise in development and application technology and has achieved remarkable success in areas such as neutral detergents and plastic recycling.

“Working closely with our global technology team and through partnerships with universities and the research community, we will continue to bring new and innovative technologies to the aluminum market,” added Porzotto.
