Lucas’ road to recovery began with his participation in a clinical trial investigating the use of a chemotherapy drug called everolimus. Everolimus is commonly used to treat brain, kidney, pancreatic, and other malignancies, but it has not been used effectively to treat DIPG.
Lucas responded well to treatment and saw the tumor gradually disappear.
After five years of declared remission, he has been cancer-free for the past seven years.
At the Gustave Roussy Cancer Center in Paris, his doctor, Dr. Jacques Grille, said he was delighted and shocked by Lucas’ recovery, saying: “Lucas has defied all odds… His case offers real hope.” It’s bringing that,” he said.
