On December 29, South Africa filed a lawsuit with the ICJ seeking an injunction against Israel, alleging that Israel’s attack on Gaza violates the Genocide Convention.

South Africa urged the ICJ to require Israel to immediately cease military operations in the Gaza Strip, to take reasonable steps to prevent a genocide of Palestinians, and to ensure that displaced persons return to their homes and receive appropriate support. It seeks to grant nine interim injunctions, including guarantees that humanitarian assistance will be available. Take the necessary measures to ensure food, water, fuel, medical supplies, hygiene products, shelter and clothing, punish those involved in genocide, and preserve evidence of genocide.

It also requested the ICJ to grant an injunction due to the urgency of the situation. After hearings on January 11 and 12, the court began deliberations after considering the parties’ submissions and evidence.

Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Petra de Sutter made a similar call, saying her country could not remain silent about Israel’s threat of genocide in the Gaza Strip and offering support for the lawsuit brought by South Africa. Appealed.

De Sutter, head of the ruling Flemish Green Party, issued a statement regarding X on January 9th.

“Belgium cannot stand idly by and watch the endless suffering of the people of Gaza. We must act against the threat of genocide. I urge Belgium to follow South Africa and urge the International Court of Justice “I would like to make this proposal to the Belgian government,” she wrote.
