EU justice commissioner Didier Reynders wants to become the next secretary-general of the international human rights body the Council of Europe, marking the end of his career in EU politics.
The news was first reported by Belgian media outlets Le Soir and Des Tigides, and Belgian officials and members of the Belgian liberal wing of Reynders’ party, the Reform Movement (MR), told POLITICO. It is recognized.
The Council of Europe is an international organization headquartered in France and is not part of the institutions of the European Union, including the Council of Europe and the Council of the European Union.
The 65-year-old Belgian member of the European Council has long expressed an interest in remaining as the next European Commission member. However, over the weekend, European Council President Charles Michel announced that he will run for his party in June’s European Parliament elections. This risks hampering Reinders’ chances of staying.
Mr Lenders now expects the Belgian government, a seven-party coalition including the MR, to formally nominate him as a candidate for a position in the Council of Europe this week. This is likely to happen, Belgian officials said.
In Belgian politics, Michel and Reynders are known for their long-running feud over control of the party, which culminated in Reynders’ ouster from the MR leadership in 2010.
“It’s not impossible that Charles Michel will try to give Reinders a chance.” [at the Council of Europe] Therefore, he will be out of the way for the next five years,” said a member of MR who was granted anonymity to discuss the sensitive issue.
The current Secretary-General of the Council of Europe is Marija Pejčinović Buric, who began her five-year term in 2019. Lenders was a formal candidate for the position in 2019, but lost the race to a former Croatian politician.
I loved you better than you would ever be able to express here. The picture is beautiful, and your wording is elegant; nonetheless, you read it in a short amount of time. I believe that you ought to give it another shot in the near future. If you make sure that this trek is safe, I will most likely try to do that again and again.
