Italian international telecommunications company Sparkle has launched the GreenMed project to develop a new undersea cable system across the Adriatic Sea linking Italy and south-eastern Europe.
GreenMed will establish a fiber optic infrastructure corridor to facilitate connectivity across Central Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East Mediterranean countries, the company said.
Starting from Italy’s Adriatic coast, it will run overland to Milan, before connecting to Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece and Turkey, as well as other major European internet and cloud nodes.
The project aims to contribute to the strong growth of the Balkan digital market, which is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 25% between 2022 and 2029. This is achieved by providing secure and diverse routes in addition to the existing terrestrial backbone. said the company.
