Black History Month is an annual observance that began in the United States, but the celebration extends across borders and into some of the most unexpected parts of the planet. One such amazing destination is Florence, Italy. Here, echoes of the city’s Renaissance past and Black ancestry create an unforgettable experience for those interested in learning more about this global commemoration.

But a lesser-known story – the impact of the black diaspora on this ancient city – is hidden beneath the towering churches and cobblestone streets. Participation in Black History Sites and Communities
One of the most famous museums in Florence’s Old Town, the Uffizi Gallery is the perfect place to start your Black History Month celebrations. Learn about the little-known life of Alessandro de His Medici, the first Duke of Florence of African descent. His portrait, attributed to Pontormo, is a must-see. This work serves as a reminder of the presence of black people in the upper echelons of Florentine society during the Renaissance.
Then, to truly understand the importance of Black History Month in Florence, engage with your local community and participate in events that amplify Black voices and experiences. Organizations such as Black History Month Florence (BHMF), an annual cultural festival, highlight the stories of African heritage and diaspora populations in Italy. Founded in 2016, BHMF has grown into a dynamic forum celebrating the achievements, struggles, and tenacity of Florence’s Black community.
This month-long event promotes cross-cultural understanding and challenges stereotypes. This will be done through art exhibitions, performances, workshops and discussions. Since its inception, BHMF has expanded its reach. In 2018, Bologna also joined the movement and launched Black History Month Bologna (BHMB). Together, these cities provide a powerful platform for dialogue, education, and empowerment.
BHMF 2024 – A month of cultural exploration
The 9th BHMF will be held from 1st to 29th February 2024 and promises an exciting line-up of events. BHMF works with various venues and institutions across Florence to invite locals and visitors to meaningfully participate in Black culture.

- exhibition: Explore thought-provoking art installations that explore themes of identity, heritage, and resilience.
- Workshops and talks: BHMF hosts workshops on Afrofuturism, storytelling, and social justice. Participants will be able to participate in discussions led by academics, activists, and community leaders.
- movie screening: Dive into a cinematic story that celebrates black excellence and challenges stereotypes. BHMF screens films by emerging filmmakers and established directors.
- music and performance: From soulful jazz to contemporary dance, BHMF showcases the beauty of Black artistic expression.
