A wealthy Chinese woman has reportedly decided to leave her $2.8 million fortune to her pets, leaving her three children with nothing.

A woman from Shanghai, surnamed Liu, decided to cut ties with her children against her will because she felt that they ignored her in her old age and did not visit her when she was sick, according to South China. The Morning Post reported, citing Zonglan News.

Meanwhile, her beloved pet cats and dogs remained by her side, she said.

Her dramatic decision was well received by some Chinese people online. One person said, “Well done. If my daughter treats me badly in the future, I will leave my house to someone else.”

The woman’s age is unknown, but the report describes her as “elderly.”

The report said her will states that after she passes away, the money must be used for her pets and their offspring.

In China, it is illegal to leave money directly to animals, so the local veterinary hospital becomes the custodian of the pet’s care and inheritance.

According to the South China Morning Post, officials from the East China branch of the China Wills Registration Center said they had told Ms Liu there were risks in allowing a pet clinic to manage all of her assets.

“We told Aunt Liu that if the children change their attitude towards her, she can change her mind again at any time,” the official said.
