Beijing:
China’s top diplomat on Sunday warned against any steps towards Taiwan’s independence after the autonomous territory ignored Beijing’s warnings and elected pro-sovereignty candidate Lai Ching-de as president. “They will be severely punished,” he warned.
Voters on the island rejected repeated attempts by the Chinese government to vote for Mr. Lai, handing a comfortable victory to Mr. Lai, who China’s ruling Communist Party considers a dangerous separatist.
The Chinese government, which claims Taiwan as its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring it under its control, reacted to Lai’s victory by saying it had no intention of changing the “inevitable trend of China’s unification.” He said no.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a joint press conference with the Egyptian side, “If someone on the island of Taiwan considers independence, it would be an attempt to divide China’s territory, and there is no doubt that they would be severely punished both by history and the law.” said. Sameh Shoukri from Cairo.
“This is a dead end,” he added.
“No matter what the election results are, nothing can change the basic fact that there is only one China and Taiwan is a part of it,” Wang said on Sunday.
“Taiwan was never a country. It never was and never will be,” he added.
Wang warned that such efforts “seriously threaten the well-being of Taiwanese compatriots, seriously undermine the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, and seriously endanger the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait region.”
