The 19-year-old finished in 47.53 seconds, 0.19 seconds ahead of Italian Alessandro Milessi, with Hungarian Nandor Nemeth third in 0.25 seconds.
This was Pan’s first individual medal at the World Championships.

Pan won Sunday’s freestyle relay with China’s first lap of 22.26 seconds, setting a new world record of 46.80 seconds in the lead. This time he was more conservative, scoring a 22.55, but still placed first, just ahead of Milessi.
In the evening’s opening final, Great Britain’s Laura Stevens led from the start in the women’s 200 butterfly, holding off a late challenge from Denmark’s Helena Rosendahl-Bach, who finished 0.09 seconds behind in a time of 2:07.35. won over.
