Chinese leader Xi Jinping heralded a new year of increased cooperation with Russia in a phone conversation with President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, as the two countries continue to strengthen their partnership amid friction with the West.
Xi told Putin that the two countries should “strengthen strategic cooperation” and “protect the national sovereignty, security and development interests of each country,” according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry.
Xi also cited the two leaders’ shared suspicions about the activities of Western governments, saying they should “resolutely oppose external interference in internal affairs.”
The phone call, which took place ahead of Saturday’s Chinese New Year, was the latest strong exchange between the two leaders, who appear to have a warm personal relationship and have expressed concerns about China’s illegitimate control. It appears that they share the goal of rebelling against the world that they perceive as the world. US.
